Cat Books and DVDs
Cat behavior is often a mystery to most of us. Most people still believe that cats can’t be trained, how untrue! Here are our recommendations for cat owners and enthusiasts:
Books
The Cat Who Cried for Help by Dr. Nicolas Dodman
Although this book places a little more emphasis on medication than I would like, it is especially good at discussing the intelligent use of drugs and behavior therapy together to bring about a solution.
Psycho Kitty?: Understanding Your Cat’s Crazy Behavior, Twisted Whiskers: Solving Your Cat’s Behavior Problems, and Think Like a Cat: How to Raise a Well-Adjusted Cat, Not a Sourpuss
by Pam Johnson-Bennet
These are delightful books, with excellent writing and terrific insight into cat behavior by someone who has specialized in understanding the mind of a cat. Psycho Kitty? and Twisted Whiskers are delightful reading, and Think Like a Cat is her more thorough and detailed handbook to cat care and behavior modification.
Cat Training Kit by Karen Pryor
Clicker training can improve your cat’s health, activity and attitude, and make your cat happier and more affectionate. Teach your cat to come when called, play without biting or scratching, stay off the table, walk on a leash, do cute tricks and games, all with a click and treat.
DVDs
Helping Kitty be Good by Suzanne Hetts, PhD and Daniel Estep, PhD
“Everyone wants their cats not only to lead happy and fulfilling lives, but also to be free from behavior problems such as not using the litterbox reliably, damaging your possessions with their claws, and being afraid of anything new and different”.
Helping Kitties Co-exist by Suzanne Hetts, PhD and Daniel Estep, PhD
“Social conflict among cats is a common source of stress. Research from the veterinary community has established a link between chronic stress and certain medical and behavioral problems. You can avoid many behavior problems that develop in a multi-cat family as a result of social conflict by following the recommendations in Helping Kitties Co-Exist”.
Dog, Cats, and Kids. Learning To Be Safe With Animals by Donald Manelli and Wayne Hunthausen, DVM
An entertaining video that teaches children respect for animals and how to be safe around cats and dogs without fear. Winner of The Parent’s Choice Award.
